I wrote in the paper version of MCN that its mechanical issues had, on stability, overshadowed its moments of brilliance. Porous crankcases, warped the front discs and an engine that repeatedly pumped out its coolant had left me deeply annoyed. If I’d paid nearly £14,000 for the motorcycle, I would were apoplectic.
On a brighter notice, plainly my motorcycle isn’t typical. Only one 1290 R proprietor contacted MCN at some stage in the 12 months to mention he was having mechanical problems (coolant), while the forums are rarely alive with complaints about the V-twin’s lack of reliability. KTM themselves have been at a loss to explain why my motorcycle’s engine pumped coolant from its expansion tank however did well known that more than one other 1290s had suffered from leaking crankcases.
In 2010 I had one my fantastic summers on a 990 Super Duke. For 8000 happy miles it jogged my memory – a lifelong sportsbike owner – that there's any other manner. The sheer a laugh of turning its throttle left me buzzing after every ride. And, in spite of the gulf in their spec and price, the equal experience lies at the heart of the 1290 R. Its electronics, its classy WP suspension, chassis geometry and ergonomics are all approximately delivering a phenomenal buzz while you turn its throttle.
At instances final summer I felt I become driving the great motorbike ever constructed. A motorbike that doesn’t take itself too critically, that is supremely smooth to ride, be it up a rustic lane or on a warm lap around Cadwell Park.
